Adrian Pearsall Chair Restoration – A Mid-Century Marvel Reimagined
Project type
Residential Upholstery
Date
November 2024
Location
Lethbridge, Alberta
This Adrian Pearsall lounge chair was brought to Elegance Upholstery in a state of extreme disrepair. The foam had deteriorated to dust, the internal frame was cracked, and the exposed wood and rattan webbing showed significant wear. Several upholstery shops deemed the piece beyond repair, citing the impossibility of refinishing the delicate rattan webbing.
Our restoration process began with rebuilding the foundation: the foam, webbing, polyester cushion wrap, and decking were completely replaced. The chair was reupholstered in a luxurious "Monroe" fabric in the earthy "Hemp" color, maintaining the timeless elegance of Pearsall’s mid-century design.
The internal frame was carefully repaired to restore structural integrity. For the exposed wood frame, we used a gel stain in "Coffee" and sealed it with polyurethane for a rich, durable finish. The rattan webbing, a hallmark of this piece, was delicately refinished using a sandblasting technique with aluminum oxide media, preserving its intricate detail while removing the old finish.
Adrian Pearsall’s design philosophy emphasized the harmony of form and function, and this restoration honors that legacy. The chair now boasts clean geometric lines, natural textures, and a flawless finish—ready to grace a contemporary space with its enduring mid-century charm.
